THIS is why you do not walk your dogs on asphalt or concrete
in the summer. If you see someone walking their dogs on
asphalt or concrete, PLEASE educated them and get the pet to
cooler ground. Original post was from Pet Ambulance Victoria
This should be sent to all the veterinarians including the specialists!
DOG PARK ALERT
We have received two notices.
(1) Nails wrapped in cheese at dog parks in Chicago and
Massachusetts (see pic). (2) from some friends that in
Augusta Maine dog park, antifreeze is being found in doggie
water bowls. Please beware and be careful and PLEASE SHARE
and spread the word
Ever wonder where puppy mill dogs come from? Here's an
example. Many get cooked alive in the sun and freeze to
death in the winter. If you purchase your dog from a pet
store, I can guarantee your "AKC" certified dog came from a
place like this. This one is even better than the ones
I saw in Iowa and Missouri!
Do you recognize she is a Yorkie?
Please do not purchase your pet from a Pet shop, Backyard
breeder or Commercial Puppy Mill.

BLOAT
Click chart to view larger version |
This is a real
combination of symptoms that spells out EMERGENCY. These are the classic
symptoms of a condition referred to as "bloat" - a dog that is pacing,
restless and has unproductive attempts to vomit.
This is a common problem in large breed
deep-chested dogs but can also occur in smaller dogs.
Basically what happens is this - the
stomach twists causing the blood supply to the stomach to be compromised
then leads to tissue death. As tissues are damaged, toxins are released
and a sequence of events occurs that if left untreated, leads to death.
If you ever notice these symptoms in
your dog, call your local veterinarian or emergency clinic as soon as
possible.
This is a condition that is fairly
common and often occurs in the evening or nighttime hours. It is also a
very expensive condition to treat.

Dealing with Excessive Barking
The first step to stopping barking is to understand why it is
happening. Dogs bark for all kinds of reasons, including
anxiety, boredom and/or loneliness. Sometimes they bark just
because it feels good. Luckily, most dogs will respond to
one or other intervention to curtail their barking. Whether you
simply bring an outdoor dog inside or take the time to apply
behavior-modification techniques, you can cause a dog to be less
of a nuisance and to be more socially acceptable. |
Removing Skunk Odor
|
No need for the tomato juice. Use a mixture of 10 parts hydrogen
peroxide to 1 part baking soda. Add a dash of degreasing
dishwashing soap and pour into a spray bottle. Spray liberally
over dry coat and allow to air dry. Avoid eyes. Works on other
objects, too! |

What You Should Ask When Choosing
Your German Shepherd Breeder
by Dyan Merkel
-
Do they Specialize in German Shepherds Only?
(At Haus Merkel German Shepherds is
all we do and have done for over 45 years, that is what makes a
specialist.)
-
Is your Breeder truly an AKC BREEDER OF MERIT?
Check with AKC. Many breeders are stealing the logo
and pretending to have earned this...if they lie about this do
you think that they will tell the truth about their dogs?
Haus Merkel is a legitimate BREEDER OF
MERIT and earned this through years of hard work and dedication
to the German Shepherd Breed.
-
Will you actually get to meet and talk to the
breeder of the puppies?
(Every time you visit or call Haus
Merkel you will be involved with the breeder only, no assistants
or answering service.)
-
How long has the German Shepherd Breeder been
breeding and how many years of experience does the breeder have
in German Shepherds.
(Haus Merkel has been breeding,
showing, and giving consultations for over 45 years.)
-
Is there more than one breeder that you will
be dealing with within the Kennel?
(At Haus Merkel there is only one World
Class Breeder, Dyan Merkel - therefore there is no conflict of
interest, no one else to locate to get the real information on
the dogs or someone else to get knowledgeable support. Haus
Merkel does no outsourcing)
-
Do they provide you with a comprehensive
"Owners Manual" along with your associated documents for your
puppy? (Haus Merkel gives you all the
Health Papers, a written contract as well as training tips,
Socialization values and diet recommendations for the life of
your dog.)
-
Will they assist in helping you raise the
puppy by answering your questions and helping you choose the
right services for training and veterinary care?
(Haus Merkel is well known for
having many dual titled German Shepherds of Merit, Seeing Eye
dogs, Therapy and Handicap assistance dogs, Search and Rescue
dogs. Our knowledge comes from years of experience in the
field we can help you find a knowledgeable veterinarian as well
as qualified trainers.)
-
Will you receive free evaluations of your dog
throughout it's lifetime?
(At Haus Merkel we pride ourselves with our family of clients
that keep us informed throughout the puppies lifetime with
visits, letters/emails and great photos. We are never too
busy to answer important questions regarding your Haus Merkel
Puppy/Dog or helping your veterinarian understand specific
things within the German Shepherd breed that they are not
familiar with.)
-
How many clients do they have that are return
customers? (Haus Merkel has been
around for over 45 years, most our clients have come back
throughout the years either getting a second/third dog for their
family or replacing their old dog(s) that passed away several
times.)
-
Do they offer placement services for your dog
after your death or if you can no longer care for it?
(Yes, Haus Merkel considers your dog part
of our family too. It is a difficult choice for owners or
trustees to place a valued family pet. Your dog is a
viable living family member that deserves the best for the rest
of it's life...we are here to see that happen. No animal
shelters or rescues are needed for these well bred well adjusted
family dogs. Just check our references!)
-
Can they show you just
how their dogs have contributed to the breed, contributed to
assisting the handicap or have they become therapy dogs?
Earned their titles and certifications to be eligible and
suitable for a breeding program.
(Haus Merkel has a 45 year proven track
record for only breeding dogs that have the requirements of
temperament, health, and structural certifications and training
to assure that you get a dog that is sound, healthy, trainable
and predictable for your family.)
-
Does your German
Shepherd Breeder encourage you to not spay and neuter and to
breed your female or male dog?
Haus Merkel believes that breeding should
be left in the hands of the professionals. The amount of
puppies produced in 20 years by breeders that only want have one
litter is staggering. These unknowledgeable people do not
believe they are breeders just because they only are having one
litter therefore adding to the burden of the
shelters and rescues. Producing unwanted puppies even 1 or 2 generations
away from their own dog that they bred as many of those will go
to people just wanting one litter and the cycle repeats itself. According to the AKC,
anyone having a litter of puppies is a breeder! We do not
encourage this! Our dogs are for homes and families, not
kennels and breeding.
-
Does your German
Shepherd Breeder offer classes and assistance programs for
someone who truly wants to breed only the worlds finest dogs?
Haus Merkel offers studies in
genetics, reproduction, whelping and
socialization. These
hands on classes are available every year by registration.
REMEMBER, YOUR GERMAN SHEPHERD
BREEDER IS RESPONSIBLE TO and FOR YOUR DOG THROUGHOUT ITS LIFETIME!
Note: The statements made here is the
opinion of Haus Merkel and there are no legal or regulatory
requirements that your German Shepherd Breeder meet all
these tests in order to have a litter of puppies to sell to
the public. Buyer beware.
BEING A CONSCIENTIOUS BREEDER
The person who truly deserves
the title BREEDER needs to be a protector of the breed, a
social worker with potential buyers, a public relations
expert and educator a socializer of puppies and trainer of
adult dogs. He or she needs to be a student of
genetics knowledgeable about pedigrees and aware of health
and veterinary requirement for breeding stock. And of
course they are also office and business managers and
sanitary engineers!
One thing for sure, a breeder is not a
breadwinner. Take the costs associated with selling,
breeding raising, nurturing the puppies and parents and
advertising, not to mention the time put into to the best
possible breeding combination, purchasing the best breeding
stock, paying stud fees, breeding tests,
etc. ovulation timing tests. At best it's a break even
experience, and often is a money losing proposition.
There are several "red flags" that you should consider when
interviewing a breeder:
1. Puppies that have not been socialized
2. Puppies that have not seen a veterinarian
3. Breeders that are reluctant to give you references
4. Breeders that breed more than one breed of dog
5. Breeders that won't allow you to see their breeding
facility or environment
6. Breeder facilities that look like puppy mills
7. Puppies that appear dirty or smell/living in poor
conditions
8. Breeders that don't work with a veterinarian providing
good quality prenatal care to the bitch
9. Breeders that don't take the puppies to their
veterinarian in for general "wellness care" and health
certificates
10. Breeders that won't give you a guarantee
11. Breeders that don't want to you meet the pups parents
12. Breeders that sell to pet stores
